Movie Analysis Gladiator - 1690 Words

Gladiator, released in 2000, is directed by Ridley Scott, and follows the revenge tale of Maximus. In the beginning, Maximus is a General in the Roman army, and he is very close to the emperor. Commodus, the emperor s son, becomes jealous of Maximus s fame and kills his family. Commodus then captures Maximus, strips him of all his power and fame, and forces him to become a gladiator slave. Throughout the movie, Maximus goes from being a very powerful individual to having no power at all. He attempts to gain his power back through fighting in the arena and taking his revenge on Commodus. Being wronged by someone else makes victims feel powerless, they try to get rid of the powerless feeling by getting their power back through vengeance, and media, like movies and TV shows, only show the black and white of revenge. When Maximus learns that his family was killed by Commodus, he feels powerless. Maximus thinks he is the emperor’s right-hand man, and that he is a powerful voice in the Roman army and government. He is faced with the harsh reality that his family was murdered and no matter how much power he had, there was nothing he could do about it. Just like in the movie, when people become victims they feel powerless to do anything to right what was wronged. Taking revenge on the person who did the offending allows victims to feel like they have some sort of control over their situation. Social Inequalities in the 19th Century Essay Different social classes can be distinguished by inequalities in such areas as power, authority, and wealth, working and living conditions, life-styles, life span, education, religion, and culture. The 19th century was primarily divided into four distinct social groups (or classes): upper class, middle class, working class, and under class. Beneath the working class of industrial workers, submerged the under class. They were often referred to as the sunken people those of which lived in poverty. Each class included a wide range of occupations of varying status and income; there was a large gap between the classes. Early in the 19th century the labels working classes and middle classes were already coming into frequent usage. The old inherited aristocracy, reinforced by the new gentry who owned their success to business, industry, and the professions, evolved into an upper class which grimly maintained control over the political system, depriving not only the working classes, but also the middle classes of a voice in (the) political developments. However, the increasingly powerful middle classes undertook organized demonstrations to remedy this situation while the working class became hostile to not only the upper class, but the middle class as well. The working class was not exactly the lowest class but endured a lot of hardships. They endured unemployment, long hours with little pay; factories full of filth, animals and pests, harsh climate/temperatures, germs and illnesses; and had almost no say in anything that had to do with their government. The upper class capitalists could have easily fixed many of these things. The citizens apart of the working class had to endure 10+ hour working days. Some children were even forced to start working as young as the age of three. Children and adults of all ages worked in the factories and had very little pay for the work they had done. Between 12s and 15s was a normal wage for the laborers. One capable of a normal human life span could not be afforded on any income fewer than 30s a week.They could barely afford housing and food. Some large families of about eight people slept in one room, sometimes going to bed without food. Sanitation was also a big problem in factories. There was no personal hygiene and disease was the number one killer. Seven out of eight people would die of disease and the other one would die of natural causes. As new factories began springing up all over London, working conditions slowly deteriorated until women and children were working twelve-hour days every day. Poor, incoherent laws inhibited the poor because their employer could treat them however they wanted and make them work for pennies. In the factories, whole families worked in joint efforts to make it out of poverty, but still with no avail. A constant risk of accidents, a result from uncovered machines, incapacitated people and caused them to be very prone to disease and sometimes put them out of work. When someone lost a body part, it was a sure sign that they would never be anything more than poor because with a 50 % chance of dying in surgery, people were usually stuck being a cripple for the rest of their lives. Work ers usually worked until midnight, and then went home for an hour-long diner, usually running the whole way because they sometimes lived hours away. They came back in an hour and worked until eight or nine, they then stumbled home in a trance like state only to come back to the dreaded factory in four hours. If the conditions the laborers worked under werent enough, they had to deal with their employers treating them badly. They sometimes beat their workers or would change the time on the clocks so that everyone had to work longer. One of the main problems in the lower class was unemployment. Most of the lower class consisted of people who had no hope of ever doing more than picking up a few weeks of money here and there. Town life in the lower class was not healthy without sanitation and the water supplies were in worse conditions than the sanitation. People in the lower class had to use the good water

Scientific Background Acids and Alkalis Many of the substances that we use today are made up of either acids or alkalis. These are two chemical opposites. Most acids are liquids. They are very corrosive and can kill or burn skin cells, bacteria etc. Acids taste sharp and sour. Strong acids such as hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid etc release hydrogen quickly whilst weaker acids such as citric acid and carbonic acid release hydrogen slowly. Strong acids measure at 1 or 2 on the pH scale and weak acids measure at 5 or 6 (The pH is a number on a scale which shows how acidic or alkaline a substance is). Most pure alkalis are solid. Behaviorists test the degree of learning using methods that measure observable behavior such as exams. Behaviorist teaching methods have proved most successful in areas where there is a correct response or easily memorized material. Identify the key factors influencing learning in your lesson. Where are these used in your lesson? From a behaviorist perspective, the transmission of information from teacher to learner is essentially the transmission of the response appropriate to a certain stimulus. Thus, the point of education is to present the student with the appropriate repertoire of behavioral responses to specific stimuli and to reinforce those responses through an effective reinforcement schedule. An effective reinforcement schedule requires consistent repetition of the material; small, progressive sequences of tasks; and continuous positive reinforcement. Without positive reinforcement, learned responses will quickly become extinct. This is because learners will continue to modify their behavior until they receive some positive reinforcement. What is/are the teacher role[s] in your lesson. The teacher will be instructing as it is an important point as they build a foundation for the understanding of thermodynamics and the application of this in the laboratory. Through drill and practice and following the specificities of the lesson will be successful in completing this task. How is/are this/these role[s] accomplished. [in other words Where is this demonstrated in your lesson? Be specific.] This is demonstrated throughout the lesson as it is a scientific law and cannot be interpreted any other way. There are specific rules to follow that cannot be interpreted or changed. They are using formulas and plugging in their respective numbers to find the change in heat. What type[s] of learning is/are best explained in your lesson: The behaviorist Method! This is teacher/visual based learning as the students will be introduced to this topic by teacher based instruction. State the teaching method[s] used in your lesson, and, for each, briefly explain how this/these method[s] relate to your lesson plan. [in other words, how is that method demonstrated in your lesson]: While there are internet resources that follow a loose guide I believe that it is in the best interests of the students if the teacher were to explain in detail thermodynamics and Hess law and apply these principals to the molar enthalpy of reactions, combustion etcà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ State all the teaching strategies used in your lesson, and, for each strategy, explain how these strategies relate to your lesson plan. [in other words, how are the strategies demonstrated in your lesson]: When designing my lesson when introducing the various points, it is important for me as the teacher to emphasize these points that will be required for students to grasp before moving onto more challenging concepts. For example the power point slide enclosed will highlight the formulas and other important concepts. For this lesson only I wish that you speak about Hess law. I also like to do some fun examples on the board because many of the students in my class are passionate about chemistry. LEARNING STYLES: This lecture appeals to the following: Logical-Mathematical learner: The lecture appeals to this type of learner because of the materials covered. Also the introduction and application of new formulas. Interpersonal learner: With multimedia and interaction between peers and those who are interpersonal learners will benefit. Verbal-Linguistic learner: This is mainly for those who are good listeners as the instructor explains and the students will listen and hopefully retain the information. Visual-Spatial learner: This type of learner will benefit from the various technologies and multimedia presentations that will capture their attention. Also seeing the formulas and the rules of Hess law will allow them to understand the material. - RESOURCES/MATERIALS: Identify all resources and materials used to create your lesson PLUS those resources and materials used by the teacher and students during your lesson Content resources (books, handouts, materials, etc.) There are a lot of handouts with the most basic of examples. Their textbook also gives a good explanation of what they need to know. Hardware (computers, TV, VHS, etc) Computers Software/Web Resources (CD- ROMs, URLs, graphics, pictures, etc.) You tube, Pictures, Websites, Powerpoint. Other media, video, satellite, etc. None - STUDENT EVALUATION: There are worksheets enclosed that will be graded for marks and will count towards their homework grade. However, I would stress that this information will only get harder as we move into chapter exams and for their presentations as well. The evaluation for this class is very minimal but essential as if the students do not understand this concept I will revisit this upon my return. STUDENT DETERMINED CONTENT: The Mind map is a very useful tool that the students can do as a teacher guided activity. I have enclosed a sample mind map and would like under your guidance to create a new one. The program that I use is called Inspiration. This will allow the students to think about their lesson and reflect. The goal is that the students think about molar enthalpy and its varying functions. For evaluating the class as a whole there are Hot potato multiple choice questions, fill in the blanks and a crossword. This would be useful to do at the end of the lesson to reiterate the points stated by the power point. The goal is to reinforce the points for the students. Also within the power point lesson there is a video about Hess law calculations courtesy of You tube. These will give the students another viewpoint and hopefully expand their mind and allow them to take in the information. The grades on the worksheet will go under the homework section of their assignment. However you need not worry about that as I will return.
